Garbage Disposal Repair in Fairfax County

Fairfax County’s trusted, family-owned appliance specialists. Same-day visits when you need them.

A garbage disposal isn’t glamorous and nobody brags about theirs — until it stops working. Then suddenly it becomes the most important appliance in the kitchen, because the alternative is hand-scooping wet food scraps out of a sink several times a day. We get it. Disposal calls are low-drama, usually quick to resolve, and often handled in a single half-hour visit.

Advanced Home Appliance Repair services every major garbage disposal brand — InSinkErator (Evolution, Badge, Pro Series), Waste King, Moen, KitchenAid, GE, and Franke. We also handle full replacement installations, which is often the right call on disposals older than 10 years, since repair parts for old units can cost almost as much as a new disposal anyway.

The Four Failure Modes

Jammed

Something got stuck in the grinding chamber — bone fragment, peach pit, piece of silverware, bottle cap, chicken wing cartilage. The disposal hums when switched on but doesn’t grind. The fix is usually a 5-minute job: we rotate the grinder plate manually with the hex wrench through the bottom access port, clear whatever’s jammed, and press the reset button. Caveat — if the motor has overheated from trying to grind a jam repeatedly, the internal thermal protector trips and won’t reset for 15-30 minutes.

Humming, not spinning

This is what a jam sounds like from outside, but it can also mean a seized motor bearing. We distinguish by trying to turn the grinder plate by hand — if it won’t rotate even with the wrench, and nothing is in the chamber, the motor bearing is toast. That’s replacement territory, not repair.

Leaking from somewhere

Leaks have three possible origins: the sink flange (where the disposal connects to the sink drain — plumber’s putty failure or loose mounting bolts), the dishwasher inlet (if the disposal has a dishwasher drain connection), or the body of the unit itself (cracked housing or failed internal seal). Flange leaks and dishwasher inlet leaks are repairable. Body leaks mean the unit is done — the internal seal is irreparable.

Dead — no sound at all when switched on

Usually the reset button (bottom of the unit) has tripped and just needs to be pushed. If reset doesn’t fix it, we test the wall switch, the outlet (most disposals are plugged into a switched outlet under the sink), and finally the disposal’s internal motor windings. Bad switches and bad outlets are more common than bad disposals — we’ve saved a lot of customers the price of a new disposal by finding a $5 switch at fault.

Installation: Because Fairfax County Does a Lot of Kitchen Remodels

A fair portion of our disposal work is installation, not repair. Kitchen remodels, upgraded-disposal swaps (Badge 1 to Evolution 1HP is a popular upgrade for serious home cooks), and first-time disposal installs in older Fairfax County homes that didn’t originally have one. We handle the full installation: disconnect the old unit if applicable, adapt the mounting flange if going between brands, rewire the electrical supply, and test dishwasher drain connections. Most installs take 45-60 minutes.

Disposal Sizing Guidance

If you’re replacing and unsure what to get, here’s the short version: 1/3 HP is too small for anything but a very light-use apartment kitchen. 1/2 HP is adequate for most households but runs noisy and struggles with chicken bones. 3/4 HP is the sweet spot for most Fairfax County homes. 1 HP (InSinkErator Evolution Excel, Waste King L-8000) is what serious cooks want — quiet, powerful, and handles virtually anything short of deliberate abuse. We can install any of them.

What Not to Put In Your Disposal

In order of how much damage they do: fibrous vegetables like celery and artichoke leaves (wrap around the blades), coffee grounds (settle in drain line and build up over time), grease and oil (solidify further down the drain and cause clogs you’ll blame on the disposal), eggshells (myth says they sharpen blades; reality says they create abrasive slurry that wears seals), and pasta/rice (expand with water and can clog). When in doubt, trash can.
