Icemaker Repair in Fairfax County

Fairfax County’s trusted, family-owned appliance specialists. Same-day visits when you need them.

Ice makers fail more often than any other part of a refrigerator, and they fail in more creative ways. Too little ice, too much ice, undersized cubes, hollow cubes, cloudy cubes, ice stuck together into a brick, ice that smells like freezer — each symptom points at a different component. Add standalone ice makers (Scotsman, U-Line, Sub-Zero ice drawers, outdoor units for Fairfax County pool houses and outdoor kitchens), and the diagnostic space widens further.

Advanced Home Appliance Repair services refrigerator ice makers (in-door and freezer-mounted), standalone under-counter ice makers, drawer-style ice makers integrated into Sub-Zero and Thermador columns, and gourmet clear-ice machines (Scotsman Prodigy Elite, Hoshizaki). We stock complete ice maker assemblies, water inlet valves, bi-metal thermostats, optical sensors, and solenoid water valves on the van.

Ice Maker Not Producing Ice At All

Diagnostic path runs from simplest to most complex:

  1. Bail arm position — often toggled accidentally. If up, the ice maker thinks the bin is full and won’t produce.
  2. Water supply — shutoff valve behind the fridge partially closed, kinked water line, frozen line inside the freezer.
  3. Water filter — expired filter (over 6 months) restricts flow to the point that the ice maker won’t fill.
  4. Inlet water valve — solenoid fails, strainer clogs with sediment. A common failure in older homes with galvanized supply lines.
  5. Ice maker module — internal motor, thermostat, or harvest mechanism fails. Usually replaced as a complete assembly because component-level rebuild costs more than a new module.

Small, Hollow, or Slushy Cubes

Almost always a water supply issue — low pressure at the fill valve. We test flow rate at the valve (should be 0.5 GPM on most residential units), clean or replace the valve, and verify the line to the ice maker isn’t partially frozen. On refrigerators that have been pushed tight against the wall, the water line at the rear can kink behind the fridge and choke the ice maker slowly.

Ice Smells or Tastes Off

Three likely causes: expired water filter (off-taste from unfiltered chlorine and particulates), food odors absorbed from the freezer into the ice (poorly sealed onions, garlic, fish — ice is a sponge for airborne smells in the freezer), or mold/biofilm in the ice bin and water line. We flush the water line, sanitize the ice bin, and replace the filter. If the taste persists, we check the drain line and water reservoir for microbial growth.

Standalone Ice Makers: Under-Counter and Outdoor Units

Dedicated ice makers — Scotsman, U-Line, Perlick, Hoshizaki — are common in Fairfax County bars, game rooms, outdoor kitchens, and home theaters. These units are very different mechanically from refrigerator ice makers. Rather than a simple freezer-and-tray system, they have a refrigeration loop dedicated solely to freezing water on a vertical or horizontal evaporator plate, a harvest cycle that uses reversed refrigerant flow to release the ice, and a water recirculation pump. Failures cluster in the water pump (mineral buildup), the condenser (dusty, needs cleaning), and the harvest solenoid. Outdoor units also battle humidity and seasonal temperature swings that stress the refrigeration system more than indoor units.

Sub-Zero and Built-In Ice Drawer Service

Sub-Zero ice drawers in the 700/PRO series column refrigerators are integrated, panel-ready units that require careful removal for service. The factory service procedure involves specific torque values for reinstalling the drawer and ensuring gasket seal. Our Sub-Zero-certified techs do this by the book — handling high-end panels with protection, re-sealing precisely, and ensuring the drawer tracks smoothly after service. Wrong procedure leads to door seal failures and warm-drawer problems that cascade into harvest failures.

When to Replace an Ice Maker Entirely

Refrigerator ice maker modules are cheap to replace ($120-$250 including labor for most brands) and last 5-8 years. Replacing makes sense when the module is over 8 years old, when repair costs exceed $200, or when a second failure has occurred within 18 months of the first. Standalone units have longer expected lifespans (10-15 years) and component-level repair is usually economical.
